What is Futsal

Put simply, futsal is a variation of indoor 5-a-side football. It uses a reduced-bounce ball and a unique set of rules, setting the sport apart from regular football, with a much stronger focus on close control, expression of skill and good decision making. The programme takes advantage of our lead coaches’ extensive knowledge and leans on Smartfootball methodology.

Limited space on a futsal court means the game encourages and requires positive movement and rotation of players, as well as instilling a sense of innovation and creativity. The sport’s high tempo also inspires quick decision-making.

Futsal Success

Go4Goal futsal has enjoyed many successes, at county and national level, including winning the FA National Futsal Championships at two age groups in 2017. Our squads have won numerous county tournaments, while our men’s squad has enjoyed two league title wins. College and university teams coached by Go4Goal have also had continued success in recent years.

Go4Goal lead coach Paul Jones has been an integral part of the Wales national futsal team coaching staff for the past 24 months, helping guide them to the Home Nations Championship in 2016, as well as their best ever points return in a UEFA Futsal qualifying group in 2017.

Luis Melville

As part of our further commitment to futsal, Go4Goal welcomed Luis Melville into the team as head coach in April 2018. Luis is a UEFA B Futsal qualified coach (the highest current futsal qualification in England) and has 13 years’ experience in the game, including coaching in The FA National Futsal League and heading up Brentford FC Community Sports Trust futsal program for eight years.

Luis is also a FA Futsal tutor and mentor and works as an assistant coach within the England U19s set-up for the Regional Talent Centre south region. He has experience coaching all age group and abilities, from age 5 up to adults.

Global Reach

Although the sport has been popularised by Brazilian legends Pele, Socrates, Ronaldo, Zico, Ronaldinho and Kaka, as well as European greats Figo, Iniesta, Xavi and Cristiano Ronaldo, futsal is being embraced globally as a fantastic sport in its own right but is considered a vital development tool for young footballers. At Go4Goal, we believe in coaching futsal for futsal first and foremost.

Futsal is fully supported by FIFA, UEFA and The FA who have introduced a 6-year Futsal specific strategy which runs until 2024. There are officially recognised domestic and international competitions at club and national level.

England have progressed up the world rankings, now a top 50 side having secured qualification for the 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup main qualifying round in October in Italy. The Under 19 national squad will also be vying for a spot in their first ever UEFA Euro Championships qualification group in March, travelling to Croatia.
